Taxonomical Study of Trombiculid Mites(Acari: Trombiculidae) in Korea

Abstract
The trombiculid mite is one of the well-known and medically important ectoparasites, which transmit the tsutsugamushi disease or provoke the pruritic dermatosis of chigger bite.
This study was carried out to classify the trombiculid mites in Korea and redescribe the species which had been recored randomly on taxonomical apects by a few foreign and Korean investigators.
A total of 6,821 trombiculid mites which were collected mostly from 170 wild rodents captured from Oct. 1989 to Oct. 1991 in several areas of Kyunggi Province and partially from soil samples were included in this taxonomical study.
1. The trombiculid mites were classified into 2 subfamilies (Trombiculinae & Gahrliepiinae), 2 tribes (Schoengastini & Trombiculini), 6 genera (Ascoschoengastia, Cheladonta, Euschoengastia, Leptotrombidium, Neotrombicula, & Walchia),and 18
species.
The ist of the species include A kitajimai, C. ikaoensis, E.(E.) koreaensis, L.(E.) gemitculum, L.(L.) crientale, L(L.) pallidum, L.(L.) palpale, L.(L.) scutellare, L.(L.) subintermedium, L.(L.) teclum, L.(L.) zetum, N.(N.) gardellai, N.(N.)
japonica,
N.(N.) pomeranzevi, N.(N.) talmiensis N.(N.) tamtyai, N.(N.) yonchonensis n. sp. And W.(W.) comataxilla.
2. A key to the 18 Korean trombiculid mites was made.
3. Eighteen species including a new species were described with illustrations and taxonomical characteristics were measured in ech species.
